I should have known I would need to change it! Following requests for weekend courses I have added one of the Make it Personal course as a Saturday option and also added some weekend workshops for those who work during the week. The picture above is of my own sketch books - and is the sort of thing we will be doing as part of Make it Personal
So here is the new programme - I will remove the other so we cant get mixed up. Happy to send pdf or word file for you - just email - hilarybeattie@ntlworld.com
Hope to see some of you here - Hilary x

Year
long courses:
Make it
Personal
These courses are designed to help you find your own voice
as an artist, initially through the preparation of materials in year 1 and then
in year 2 (will follow in 2018/19) studying design techniques and principles to
utilise these materials. In order to achieve this it is important that we build
a good relationship between tutor and student and also that you learn the full
variety of techniques. For this reason
these courses are only available as block booking for the whole course
Please note there are 2 versions of this course running both
running for 12 days: One is for 2 days every other month (roughly) to enable
those farther away to travel. The other is for 1 day a month. I have listed the
bi-monthly ones in blue to avoid confusion
Please also note that the day a month course is running
twice – once as a weekday option and once as a Saturday option for those that
work. I have listed the Sat options in red – again to avoid confusion!
Mentoring
Days
These are days that you can utilise as you wish. You can
book a few or more! and work with me for several months on a project you have
planned, or book just one maybe to gain advice and help for a specific sticking
point in your work or to learn a new technique. We can cover any of the
techniques I teach and you will receive tuition and guidance to enable your
development as an artist

Boundless Beautiful Blocks
In this 3 day course we will be
really pushing the boundaries with beautiful Indian wooden printing blocks and seeing
how exciting they can be in our creative hands.
We will print, monoprint, rub and
layer prints to make beautiful, individual materials to work with. We will then
go on to lay out a hanging or wall panel using the materials we have made. This
can then be stitched either by machine or hand to create a piece of unique art
to be proud of

Wed 12th, Thurs 13th and Fri 14th Screen Printing
Think
you can’t screen print? Think again. The first time I tried screen-printing, I
failed …. how?? Truly no idea – but it put me off for a long time. But the
happy truth is – it is REALLY EASY!! These three days will be spent having a
somewhat irreverent, but wonderfully creative examination of the many ways we
can use screens in creating personal cloth or paper
Wed 19th, Thurs 20th & Fri 21st
Monoprints and Gelliprinting
In these three days we will
really look in depth at the wonderful scope of monoprinting – including those
made using a gelli plate. Every mono print is a one-off, so there is no better
way to express a personal style. We will make a variety of textural and feature
prints, and then use these to develop a piece of work, either on canvas, or on
a felt backing

Found Treasures
If you can’t resist picking up
leaves, stones, bark, sticks, cones, shells, seed pods and all the other
incredibly interesting treasures to be found in our wonderful world – then this
is the three days for you. We will look at what can feasibly be collected (fish
rot and smell) and ways of preserving them if needed. We will also look at ways
of recording finds that are transient (the rotting fish) such as printing,
photographs and making lino cuts, stencils etc. Finally we will prepare canvas
or paper for your collections and look at ways of mounting and displaying them.

Silhouettes
Get
double the value with this lovely seasonal wall hanging, which you can also use
as a design to have printed onto your own Christmas cards. We will be using
bright Christmassy fabrics and looking at a simple way to make abstract design
layouts, which we will use to create a lively background for a seasonal
silhouette We will stitch this down by machine and then add your choice of
several Christmas silhouettes on top. Extra detail can then be added by hand or
machine as desired. We will look briefly at mounting the work to hang on the
wall and also discuss how to get the piece printed as a card.

On day
one we will look at making your own designed stamps and lino cuts to use for
your specials cards and wrap. We will move on to studying and sampling colour
combinations and composition. On day two we will put all this into practise to
make some beautiful and unique cards and wrap to give to your loved ones this
Christmas. I may even get us mince pies (you will notice I did NOT say ‘make’!)

Come
and spend a festive weekend making fabric and/or papers to use for your
Christmas projects. We will use Indian wood printing blocks with fabric paints,
neocolour crayons and dyes to make exciting materials to use for cards,
wrapping, hangings or any other Christmas projects
Mon 11th and Tues 12th Decorate your own Home
Accessories
Come and enjoy two mixed media
days making your own unique home accessories. On day one we will decorate a
variety of papers with paint and dye, using stencils and stamps and the
rollagraph. Then on day two you can choose an accessory to work with (from a
range in the shop) and learn how to cover it with your papers and achieve a
really professional finish. Keep for yourself or could be a gorgeous gift for a
special friend at Christmas
(NB: all dyes, paints, paper
glues and sealants will be provided for this workshop – but students will need
to purchase an accessory from a range available in the shop. These are all
reasonable priced and range from about £3 for a mini crate or set of coasters
to decorate to £15 for a beautiful perpetual calendar or tool caddy with lots
more options in between)

Wed 3rd Mentoring Day 7
Sat 6th and Sun 7th Create your own
sketchbooks and colouring books for 2018
You have probably noticed the
craze for adult colouring books and their promotion as relaxation/mindfulness
tools. Well that is because colouring and creating are good for us - as long as
we take away expectations and demands for perfection. In this lovely weekend course
you will work to set yourself up with at least two books to play and colour in
this year. We will use a mix of papers and fabrics and look at variety of
binding methods – including a ‘wiro’ bind for which I have the machine! We will
then use your choice from the gelli plate, stencils, stamps or wood blocks to
set up pages for further play during the year. You could make your books themed
(eg a garden or holiday journal) or general – or both! No more ‘precious’ empty
books on shelves - just lots of well loved, colourful and inspiring play books
NB – this course is a shortened
version of the three day workshop, especially for those who can only come at
weekends. We will not be able to look at as many design ideas for filling your
books and you may make less books – but we will still pack loads in!

Cancellations:
I
realise that sometimes students have to cancel and want to do the best I can to
accommodate that. So I have a very simple cancellation policy: If I can refill
your place then you will get a full refund no matter when you cancel. If I
can’t then no refund will be given – no matter when you cancel. I hope that
seems fair to us all!
Payment:
All
courses are paid for in advance at the time of booking – including the full
amount for the longer courses. I know this may seem harsh – but I have pondered
long and hard and any other way is just not practical for me. Courses can be
purchased via my online shop: www.hilarybshop.co.uk or via email to: hilarybeattie@ntlworld.com.
New
Workshops:
I will be adding new workshops to the
2018 programme as I see which courses are most popular. I will also run a
waiting list for each workshop if it is oversubscribed
And I will try to re-run any courses that
book up fast – but my time is stretched very tightly so I can’t guarantee this.
The only way to be certain of attending a workshop is to book it!
More workshop information and
any requirements lists will be sent out at least 2 months before the workshop
together with a list of possible places to stay. Any queries please email me at
hilarybeattie@ntlworld.com
Hope to see you here in sunny
Wales!! – Hilary x
